Soft and Fluffy Dinner Rolls

Step 1: Mix the Dough

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add the warm milk, egg, melted butter, and vegetable oil.
  3. Mix until a soft dough forms.

Step 2: Knead

  1. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  2. If the dough is sticky, add a little flour, one tablespoon at a time.

Step 3: First Rise

  1. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl.
  2. Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.
  3. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1½ hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 4: Shape the Rolls

  1. Punch down the dough.
  2. Divide it into 8 equal pieces.
  3. Roll each piece into a smooth ball.

Step 5: Second Rise

  1. Arrange the dough balls in a greased 8-inch (20 cm) round baking pan or square pan.
  2. Cover and let rise for 30–45 minutes, until puffy and touching each other.

Step 6: Bake

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Brush the tops with the egg wash.
  3. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the tops are beautifully golden brown.

Step 7: Finish

  1. Remove the rolls from the oven.
  2. Immediately brush with melted butter for a soft, shiny crust.
  3. Let cool for about 10 minutes before serving.

Tips for Perfect Soft Buns

  • Use warm milk (about 110°F/43°C), not hot, to activate the yeast.
  • Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic for the best texture.
  • Don’t overbake—remove the rolls as soon as they’re golden to keep them soft.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
