Step 1: Mix the Dough
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt.
- Add the warm milk, egg, melted butter, and vegetable oil.
- Mix until a soft dough forms.
Step 2: Knead
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- If the dough is sticky, add a little flour, one tablespoon at a time.
Step 3: First Rise
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl.
- Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.
- Let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
Step 4: Shape the Rolls
- Punch down the dough.
- Divide it into 8 equal pieces.
- Roll each piece into a smooth ball.
Step 5: Second Rise
- Arrange the dough balls in a greased 8-inch (20 cm) round baking pan or square pan.
- Cover and let rise for 30–45 minutes, until puffy and touching each other.
Step 6: Bake
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Brush the tops with the egg wash.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the tops are beautifully golden brown.
Step 7: Finish
- Remove the rolls from the oven.
- Immediately brush with melted butter for a soft, shiny crust.
- Let cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
Tips for Perfect Soft Buns
- Use warm milk (about 110°F/43°C), not hot, to activate the yeast.
- Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic for the best texture.
- Don’t overbake—remove the rolls as soon as they’re golden to keep them soft.
- Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
