For particularly stubborn areas, allow the dampened residue to soften for a while before wiping. You may need to repeat the process rather than aggressively scrubbing the surface. A non-abrasive sponge can help remove softened grease without unnecessarily scratching the oven interior.
Pay special attention to the oven door, where baked-on splashes and grease can make the glass look cloudy. Apply the diluted cleaning solution carefully and wipe the area thoroughly afterward with clean water.
There are a few important precautions. Dishwasher tablets are concentrated cleaning products and can irritate the skin and eyes, so household gloves are a good idea. Keep the room well ventilated and never mix dishwasher detergent with bleach, ammonia, vinegar, or other cleaning chemicals.
You should also avoid getting cleaning solution into heating elements, electrical components, fans, vents, or other areas that are not intended to become wet. Different ovens use different materials and coatings, so check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions before using any detergent on the interior.
If your oven has a special self-cleaning, steam-cleaning, catalytic, or delicate coating, use the recommended cleaning method instead. Some surfaces can be damaged by products that are too alkaline or abrasive.
Once the grease has been removed, wipe the entire treated area several times with a clean damp cloth to remove detergent residue. Leaving cleaning product behind is not desirable, particularly inside an appliance used for cooking food. Allow everything to dry completely before using the oven again.
This trick can also be useful as part of a regular home maintenance routine. Cleaning an oven before grease becomes heavily baked onto the surface is considerably easier than waiting until layers of residue accumulate.
So even if you don’t own a dishwasher, keeping a small supply of dishwasher tablets may have other practical household uses. Just remember that these products are powerful cleaners, not harmless household ingredients, and they should always be used carefully and according to the instructions for your particular appliance.
