How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows and Make Them White and Fresh Again

Step 1: Check the Care Label

Read the manufacturer’s washing instructions to make sure your pillows are machine washable.

Step 2: Pre-Treat Yellow Stains

Mix a small amount of liquid detergent with water and gently rub it into any heavily stained areas. Let it sit for 15–20 minutes.

Step 3: Load the Washing Machine

Place two pillows in the washing machine at the same time to help keep the load balanced.

Step 4: Add Cleaning Ingredients

Add:

  • 1 tablespoon liquid laundry detergent
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • ½ cup oxygen-based bleach

Avoid using too much detergent, as it can leave residue inside the pillow.

Step 5: Wash

Run a gentle or bulky bedding cycle using warm or hot water if the care label allows.

Step 6: Freshen the Rinse

Add ½ cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle to help remove detergent residue and neutralize odors.

Step 7: Rinse Again (Optional)

If your machine allows, run an extra rinse cycle to ensure all cleaning products are removed.

Step 8: Dry Thoroughly

Dry the pillows on a low heat setting. Add dryer balls or clean tennis balls wrapped in socks to help fluff the pillows and prevent clumping.

Make sure the pillows are completely dry before using them to prevent mildew.

Tips to Keep Pillows Fresh Longer

  • Use washable pillow protectors.
  • Wash pillowcases every week.
  • Air pillows outside on a dry, sunny day occasionally.
  • Fluff pillows daily to maintain their shape.
  • Wash pillows every 4–6 months, depending on use.

Important Notes

  • Do not use chlorine bleach on all pillow types, as it can weaken fabrics and damage some fillings.
  • Memory foam and latex pillows should be spot-cleaned only unless the manufacturer specifically states they are machine washable.
  • If your pillows remain flat, lumpy, or have a persistent odor after washing, it may be time to replace them.

With regular cleaning and proper drying, washable pillows can stay cleaner, fresher, and more comfortable for a longer time.
