How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows and Make Them White and Fresh Again

Over time, bed pillows can become yellowed from sweat, body oils, and everyday use. Fortunately, many washable pillows can be refreshed with a deep-cleaning routine that helps remove stains and odors.

Before you begin: Check the care label on your pillow. This method is generally suitable for machine-washable polyester and down-alternative pillows. Memory foam and latex pillows should not be machine washed.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 machine-washable pillows
  • 1 tablespoon liquid laundry detergent
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • ½ cup oxygen-based bleach (not chlorine bleach)
  • ½ cup white vinegar (for the rinse cycle)
  • Warm or hot water (according to the care label)
  • Dryer balls or clean tennis balls (optional)
