Over time, bed pillows can become yellowed from sweat, body oils, and everyday use. Fortunately, many washable pillows can be refreshed with a deep-cleaning routine that helps remove stains and odors.
Before you begin: Check the care label on your pillow. This method is generally suitable for machine-washable polyester and down-alternative pillows. Memory foam and latex pillows should not be machine washed.
What You’ll Need
- 2 machine-washable pillows
- 1 tablespoon liquid laundry detergent
- ½ cup baking soda
- ½ cup oxygen-based bleach (not chlorine bleach)
- ½ cup white vinegar (for the rinse cycle)
- Warm or hot water (according to the care label)
- Dryer balls or clean tennis balls (optional)
