Homemade Wonder Bread (Soft & Fluffy Sandwich Loaf)

  • by

Step 1: Mix the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and instant yeast.

Add the melted butter, then stir in the flour and salt.

Mix until a shaggy dough forms.

Step 2: Knead

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface.

Knead for 8–10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth, soft, and elastic.

If using a stand mixer, knead with the dough hook for 6–8 minutes.

Step 3: First Rise

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl.

Cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel.

Let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1½ hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 4: Shape the Loaf

Punch down the dough to release the air.

Flatten it into a rectangle, then roll it tightly into a log.

Pinch the seam closed.

Place the dough seam-side down into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.

Step 5: Second Rise

Cover the loaf pan loosely.

Let the dough rise for 30–45 minutes, or until the dough rises about 1 inch above the rim of the pan.

Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 6: Bake

Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.

If you have an instant-read thermometer, the center should reach 190–200°F (88–93°C).

Step 7: Butter the Top

Remove the bread from the oven.

Brush the top with melted butter for an extra-soft crust and beautiful shine.

Step 8: Cool

Let the loaf cool in the pan for 10 minutes.

Transfer it to a wire rack and cool completely before slicing.

Tips for Perfect Bread

  • Use warm—not hot—milk to help the yeast activate properly.
  • Measure the flour accurately for the softest texture.
  • Avoid slicing the bread while it’s still hot, as it can become gummy.
  • Store in an airtight bag to keep it soft for several days.

Storage

  • Room Temperature: Store in an airtight container or bread bag for up to 4 days.
  • Freezer: Wrap tightly and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
