Episode 4: The Choice

The applause faded.

Every guest watched in silence.

Temi’s words hung in the air.

“If you embarrass my family today… I don’t know if we can recover from this.”

Emeka looked at her.

Then at me.

For a long moment, nobody moved.

Finally, he spoke.

“I’m not choosing between my wife and my sister.”

“I’m choosing between what’s right… and what’s wrong.”

Temi lowered her eyes.

“My mother only wanted the wedding to be perfect.”

Emeka shook his head.

“A perfect wedding built on humiliating the person who gave me my life isn’t perfect.”

“It’s a lie.”

Temi’s mother stepped forward.

“So you’re willing to disgrace your new family for her?”

Emeka answered without hesitation.

“I already have a family.”

“I’ve had one since I was seven.”

A murmur spread through the crowd.

Temi’s father’s face turned red.

“This is enough.”

“You’ve made your point.”

“Let’s continue the reception.”

“No,” Emeka replied.

“Not yet.”

He climbed onto the small stage where the master of ceremonies had been standing.

He picked up the microphone.

“Before we continue…”

“…there’s someone you all need to meet properly.”

He looked toward me.

“Sister Grace…”

“Please come here.”

My legs felt weak.

“I can’t…”

He smiled.

“Yes, you can.”

Slowly, I walked to the stage.

Hundreds of eyes followed me.

I wanted to disappear.

Instead, Emeka gently took my hand.

“When people congratulate me today…”

“They’re congratulating the wrong person.”

“They see a successful man.”

“They don’t see the woman who worked two jobs.”

“The woman who skipped meals.”

“The woman who sold our mother’s jewelry to pay my tuition.”

A gasp swept through the audience.

“I never told anyone that.”

“Because she never wanted credit.”

Tears rolled down my face.

He reached into his suit pocket.

Everyone assumed he was taking out a handkerchief.

Instead…

He pulled out a small velvet box.

The guests whispered.

He knelt in front of me.

I quickly stepped back.

“Emeka…”

“What are you doing?”

He opened the box.

Inside was a simple silver ring.

Not a wedding ring.

An old family ring.

It had belonged to our mother.

“I spent three years looking for this.”

“I bought it back from the jeweler who purchased it all those years ago.”

I covered my mouth.

I remembered selling it.

I had cried the entire walk home.

That ring had paid one semester of his university fees.

He slipped it onto my finger.

“You sacrificed every piece of your future for mine.”

“I can never repay you.”

“But I can make one promise…”

He looked directly into my eyes.

“From today…”

“You will never carry your burdens alone again.”

The crowd stood to their feet.

Many were openly crying.

Even the photographer wiped away tears before taking another picture.

But across the room…

Temi’s mother quietly picked up her handbag.

She leaned toward her husband.

“We’re leaving.”

Temi watched them go.

Then she looked at Emeka.

Then at me.

For the first time…

She truly understood the depth of the bond between us.

She took a slow breath…

…and walked toward the stage.

Everyone wondered what she was about to say.
