Episode 3: “She Is the Reason I’m Standing Here”
The entire courtyard went silent.
Even the photographer lowered his camera.
Emeka pushed past the guests, his face filled with panic.
“Sister Grace!”
He reached me and looked from my tear-filled eyes to the ₦5,000 note still in the security guard’s trembling hand.
“What is this?”
Before I could answer, the security guard spoke.
“Sir… I was instructed not to allow her into the reception.”
Emeka frowned.
“By who?”
The guard swallowed hard.
“I… I was told by Madam Ronke.”
Temi’s mother.
Every head turned toward her.
She froze.
For the first time that day, the smile disappeared from her face.
Emeka looked at her in disbelief.
“Mummy… is that true?”
She walked forward confidently.
“I did what was best.”
“You should thank me.”
He stared at her.
“Thank you?”
“Your sister would have made people ask questions. Today is about your future. Important people are here. Investors. Business partners. We couldn’t allow unnecessary distractions.”
Emeka laughed.
It wasn’t a happy laugh.
It was the sound of a heart breaking.
“You think my sister is a distraction?”
Temi hurried over.
“Emeka, please… let’s discuss this privately.”
“No.”
His voice echoed across the venue.
“We’ll discuss it right here.”
He turned to the guests.
“Do all of you know who this woman is?”
He pointed at me.
“This is Grace.”
“When I was seven years old, our parents died.”
“She was nineteen.”
“She quit university.”
“She gave up every dream she had…”
“…so I could keep mine.”
Guests listened in complete silence.
“My school fees?”
“She paid them.”
“My textbooks?”
“She bought them.”
“My graduation suit?”
“She skipped meals for months so I could wear it.”
His voice cracked.
“The only reason I’m standing here today…”
“…is because she refused to let me fall.”
He looked directly at Temi’s mother.
“And you offered her ₦5,000 to disappear?”
Nobody said a word.
Even the musicians stopped playing.
Then Emeka did something no one expected.
He took off the expensive gold wristwatch he had received as a wedding gift.
He handed it to the security guard.
“I’m sorry.”
“You were only doing your job.”
The guard shook his head.
“I’m the one who should apologize, sir.”
Emeka smiled sadly.
“No.”
“The people who owe my sister an apology know exactly who they are.”
He walked over to me.
Took my hand.
And led me through the gates himself.
“This reception doesn’t start until my sister walks in.”
The guests erupted into applause.
But just as we reached the entrance…
Temi quietly removed her wedding ring.
She looked at Emeka with tears in her eyes.
“If you embarrass my family today…”
“…I don’t know if we can recover from this.”
Emeka stopped walking.
Still holding my hand.
He slowly turned to face his new wife.
For the first time since the ceremony…
he had to choose between the woman he had just married…
and the sister who had spent fifteen years raising him.
