Amish White Bread

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

  1. In a large bowl combine warm water and sugar.
  2. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Add the yeast and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes foamy.

Step 2: Mix the Dough

  1. Add:
    • salt
    • vegetable oil
  2. Gradually mix in the flour one cup at a time.
  3. Stir until a soft dough forms.

Step 3: Knead the Dough

  1. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface.
  2. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Step 4: First Rise

  1. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl.
  2. Cover with a clean towel.
  3. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 5: Shape the Loaves

  1. Punch down the dough.
  2. Divide it into two equal pieces.
  3. Shape each piece into a loaf.

Step 6: Second Rise

  1. Place the dough into two greased 9×5 inch loaf pans.
  2. Cover and let rise again for 30–40 minutes.

Step 7: Bake

  1. Preheat the oven to 175°C (350°F).
  2. Bake for 30 minutes until the tops are golden brown.

Step 8: Cool

  1. Remove the bread from the pans.
  2. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
