What Happens When You Put the Wrong Thing in a Slow Cooker? This Mistake Can Destroy It

A slow cooker can be one of the most convenient appliances in a kitchen. You add your ingredients, choose the temperature, and let the appliance slowly cook your meal while you take care of other things. But there is an important rule that every slow-cooker owner should know: not everything that can tolerate heat belongs inside a slow cooker.

The photograph above shows what can happen when a slow cooker is used incorrectly. The cooking insert appears severely damaged, with darkened material, broken pieces, and areas where the surface has cracked or deteriorated. Once a slow cooker reaches this condition, continuing to use it can be unsafe.

The first thing to understand is that a slow cooker is designed primarily for cooking food in its intended ceramic or stoneware insert. The insert is specifically manufactured to withstand the gradual heating and cooling associated with slow cooking. The appliance is not a general-purpose heating container.

This does not mean that “you cannot put anything in a slow cooker.” You can absolutely put food, liquids, sauces, vegetables, meat, grains, and other ingredients inside it when the appliance is designed to handle them. The important issue is what you put inside, how much you use, and whether the insert is designed for that purpose.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is using a slow cooker to heat non-food materials.

Items such as plastics that are not specifically rated for the temperatures involved, certain packaging materials, adhesives, paints, chemicals, or unknown substances can release unpleasant or potentially hazardous fumes when heated. Some materials can melt and permanently contaminate the cooking insert.

Even putting a container inside the slow cooker can be problematic if that container isn’t specifically approved for the temperatures and conditions involved.

Another common mistake is heating the slow cooker while it is empty for long periods. Although some models may tolerate brief preheating according to their manufacturer’s instructions, a slow cooker should not generally be treated like an empty stovetop pot.

The ceramic insert is designed to heat gradually. Extreme temperature changes can cause thermal shock, which may crack or break the stoneware.

For example, pouring very cold liquid into a very hot insert can potentially damage it. Similarly, placing a hot ceramic insert directly onto a cold or wet surface can create an abrupt temperature change.

That’s why slow-cooker manufacturers typically recommend allowing the insert to cool naturally and handling it carefully.

If your slow cooker insert develops a crack, chip, deep scratch, or significant damage, don’t simply continue using it because it still appears to heat normally.

A damaged ceramic insert can potentially break while hot, spilling extremely hot food and liquid. That can create a serious kitchen safety hazard.

You should also avoid using an insert that has lost pieces of its coating or surface material. The exact risk depends on the construction of the particular model, so checking the manufacturer’s instructions is the safest approach.

Another important mistake is putting the removable ceramic insert directly on a stovetop unless the manufacturer specifically states that it is designed for stovetop use. Some slow-cooker inserts are designed only for the slow cooker heating base.

Similarly, never put the electrical heating base into water. The removable cooking insert may be washable according to the manufacturer’s instructions, but the electrical portion of the appliance should not be submerged.

When cleaning a slow cooker, allow it to cool completely first. Don’t pour cold water into an extremely hot ceramic insert. Once it has cooled, use warm water and an appropriate dishwashing method recommended by the manufacturer.

If food has become badly burned onto the surface, avoid aggressively scraping the ceramic with metal utensils. A period of soaking with warm water and dish soap can often loosen stubborn residue without damaging the surface.

For particularly difficult buildup, follow the cleaning instructions provided for your specific model rather than experimenting with harsh chemicals.

It’s also important to remember that slow cookers are not designed to fry food like a deep fryer. Adding large quantities of oil or using the appliance for purposes it wasn’t designed for can create unnecessary risks.

Before experimenting with a cooking appliance, check the manufacturer’s instructions. This is especially important for home appliances, because different models can have very different temperature limits and approved uses.

If you encounter a slow cooker that looks like the one shown in the photograph—with extensive cracking, melted material, burned components, or pieces breaking away—don’t try to clean it and put it back into service.

Unplug the appliance, allow it to cool completely, and inspect the damage. If the ceramic insert itself is badly damaged, replacement is generally safer than attempting a repair.

If the electrical heating base has been exposed to melted material, liquid, fire, or severe overheating, it should also be inspected before being used again. When in doubt, replacing the appliance is safer than taking a chance with a potentially damaged electrical device.

The good news is that most slow-cooker accidents are easy to prevent.

Use the appliance only for its intended purpose. Use the original or manufacturer-approved cooking insert. Follow the recommended temperature settings. Avoid sudden temperature changes. Never heat unknown materials inside it. Keep the electrical base away from water, and replace damaged components rather than trying to improvise a repair.

A slow cooker is an excellent kitchen appliance when used correctly, but it isn’t a substitute for an oven, stovetop, saucepan, or general-purpose heating device.

The lesson from the damaged cooker in the photograph is simple: before putting something unusual into an appliance, ask one question—was this appliance actually designed to heat it?

If the answer isn’t clearly yes, don’t put it inside. A little caution can prevent a ruined appliance, a costly replacement, unpleasant fumes, and potentially dangerous kitchen accidents.
