In that single eye contact, my son knew. He knew that I had heard every word behind the curtain. He knew that I had seen the gray tube of glue. And he knew that he had done this to his own bride.
“Nick, DO SOMETHING!” Renee screamed, completely abandoning all high-society decorum.
She yanked herself forward with all her weight. A loud, violent RIP reverberated through the speakers. The entire back panel of her dress tore wide open, exposing her slip and skin, but the thick base of the gown remained utterly glued to the furniture. In her desperation, she tried to force herself upward anyway. The heavy wooden chair came with her, lifted two inches off the ground by the sheer strength of the bond, before she lost her balance and slammed back down, sending wine glasses rattling and silverware flying across the table.

A collective gasp rippled through the two hundred guests. Gasps turned into hushed whispers, and hushed whispers quickly turned into muffled laughter. Phones began to slide out of pockets. The very high-society crowd Renee had tried so hard to impress was now filming her hysterical, tearing struggle.
“Get scissors! Somebody get scissors!” Nicholas yelled, his face pale as a sheet as he fumbled with the back of her dress, trying to pull her free. But the industrial adhesive was unrelenting. The more he pulled, the more the expensive fabric shredded, leaving Renee half-naked and utterly anchored to the seat.
Renee’s mother rushed over from a nearby table, crying out in horror as she saw her daughter throwing a full-blown violent tantrum, kicking her legs and screaming at the waitstaff who were hovering helplessly with cloth napkins.
Amidst the chaos, Rosario gently tugged at my sleeve. Her dark eyes were filled with genuine pity. “Oh, Bill… the poor girl,” she whispered softly, her heart as pure as the day I met her in Queens forty years ago. “Her dress is ruined. Shouldn’t we go help them?”
