That sudden foul smell when you cough up a small white or yellow lump can feel embarrassing and confusing. These tiny, hard balls are commonly called tonsil stones (tonsilloliths), and they are actually a very common condition.
Many people experience persistent bad breath, throat irritation, or the feeling that something is stuck in the throat without realizing tonsil stones may be the cause.
What Are Tonsil Stones?
Tonsil stones are small deposits that form inside tiny pockets in the tonsils called tonsil crypts.
They are made from trapped:
- Food particles
- Dead cells
- Mucus
- Bacteria
- Minerals like calcium
Over time, this material hardens into small white or yellowish stones.
Why Do They Smell So Bad?
The unpleasant odor comes mainly from sulfur-producing bacteria living inside the tonsils.
These bacteria release compounds similar to the smell of:
- Rotten eggs
- Sulfur
- Strong cheese
That’s why brushing your teeth alone often doesn’t completely fix the bad breath.
