Social media is full of posts claiming that a special drink can remove years of “stuck poop” from your body, clean out your colon, and instantly cure constipation. Some even joke that it can remove the gum you swallowed as a child!
While these claims may sound impressive, the reality is very different.
Does Poop Stay in Your Colon for Years?
No. In healthy people, the digestive system continuously moves waste through the intestines and out of the body.
The idea that large amounts of old stool remain stuck in the colon for years is generally a myth. Your colon is designed to regularly eliminate waste.
However, constipation can cause stool to move more slowly, making bowel movements uncomfortable and less frequent.
What Is Constipation?
Constipation commonly includes:
- Fewer than three bowel movements per week
- Hard, dry stools
- Straining during bowel movements
- Feeling that the bowel is not completely empty
- Abdominal discomfort or bloating
Many people experience occasional constipation, especially during periods of stress, dehydration, or dietary changes.
