PART 3
The explosion was heard blocks away.
Dust filled the air.
People cried.
Firefighters stared in disbelief.
No one could survive that.
Then a voice shouted.
“Over there!”
A section of wall had fallen outward.
From the smoke emerged Michael.
Covered in ash.
Bleeding.
Barely able to walk.
And in his arms was a young boy.
The crowd burst into tears.
Parents hugged their children.
Even hardened firefighters couldn’t hold back emotion.
Michael collapsed seconds later.
The boy survived.
The girl survived.
But Michael’s injuries were severe.
Three days later, surrounded by family and fellow firefighters, Captain Michael Hayes passed away.
News of his sacrifice spread across the country.
Thousands attended his funeral.
Schools were named after him.
Scholarships were created in his honor.
Years later, the little boy Michael saved became a firefighter himself.
During his graduation ceremony, he held up an old photograph of the man who saved his life.
Then he said:
“Heroes don’t wear capes. Sometimes they wear helmets.”
The audience stood and applauded.
And though Captain Michael Hayes was gone…
his courage would never be forgotten.
