Step 1: Activate the Yeast

  1. Pour the warm milk into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Add the sugar and yeast.
  3. Stir gently and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

Step 2: Make the Dough

  1. Add the egg, softened butter, and salt to the yeast mixture.
  2. Mix well.
  3. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, stirring until a soft dough forms.

Step 3: Knead the Dough

  1. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface.
  2. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time.

Step 4: First Rise

  1. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl.
  2. Cover with a clean kitchen towel.
  3. Let rise in a warm place for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 5: Shape the Rolls

  1. Punch down the risen dough.
  2. Divide it into 12 equal portions.
  3. Roll each portion into a smooth ball.
  4. Arrange the balls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish or on a lined baking sheet.

Step 6: Second Rise

  1. Cover the shaped rolls with a towel.
  2. Let them rise for 30–45 minutes until puffy and nearly doubled.

Step 7: Bake

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Bake the rolls for 15–18 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

Step 8: Finish and Serve

  1. Remove the rolls from the oven.
  2. Brush the tops with melted butter while still warm.
  3. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Tips for Extra Soft Rolls

  • Use warm milk, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Do not add too much flour; a slightly soft dough creates fluffier rolls.
  • Brushing with butter after baking keeps the crust soft.
  • Store in an airtight container to maintain freshness.

Serving Ideas

  • Spread with butter and jam for breakfast.
  • Use for mini sandwiches or sliders.
  • Serve alongside soups, stews, and roasted meats.
