Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy (Classic Homemade Recipe)

Step 1: Prepare the Meat Mixture

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, minced onion, garlic, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper.
Mix gently with your hands until everything is evenly combined. Avoid overmixing because it can make the patties tough.

Step 2: Shape the Patties

Divide the mixture into 4–5 oval patties.
Salisbury steaks traditionally have an oval shape instead of round burgers, which helps them cook evenly and gives them their classic look.

Step 3: Brown the Patties

Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a small drizzle of oil.
Place the patties in the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes per side until nicely browned.

Remove them from the pan and set aside on a plate. They do not need to be fully cooked yet.

Step 4: Cook the Onions

In the same skillet, melt the butter and add the sliced onions.
Cook them slowly for 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and golden caramelized. This step builds the deep flavor of the gravy.

Step 5: Make the Gravy

Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir constantly for about 1 minute.
Slowly pour in the beef broth, whisking to avoid lumps.

Add:

  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Ketchup
  • Salt and pepper

Let the gravy simmer for 2–3 minutes until it thickens.

Step 6: Simmer the Salisbury Steaks

Return the browned patties to the skillet and spoon some gravy over them.

Cover and simmer on low heat for 10–12 minutes, until the patties are fully cooked and tender.

Serving Suggestions

Serve your Salisbury steak with:

  • Creamy mashed potatoes
  • Buttered egg noodles
  • Steamed green beans
  • Roasted carrots

The rich onion gravy poured over the sides makes the whole plate incredibly delicious.

Cooking Tips

✔ Use 80/20 ground beef for juicy patties.
✔ If the gravy becomes too thick, add a little extra beef broth.
✔ For deeper flavor, add sliced mushrooms with the onions.
✔ This dish tastes even better the next day because the flavors develop more.

✅ Storage:
Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days in an airtight container. Reheat gently on the stove with a splash of broth.
