The next morning, sunlight filtered through the ICU blinds, but Elena felt nothing except determination.
Her attorney, Rachel Morrison, entered carrying a thick folder.
“I’ve filed the emergency protection order,” Rachel said.
“And Dominic?”
“He was served an hour ago.”
Elena nodded.
“What about the company?”
Rachel smiled.
“That’s where things become interesting.”
She placed several documents on the hospital tray.
“For six years, Dominic believed he owned everything.”
“He never read the incorporation papers.”
“He signed every amendment you prepared.”
“And because of that…”
Rachel slid one page toward her.
“You still legally own thirty-eight percent of Morrison Strategic Consulting.”
Elena looked at the signature.
Dominic’s own handwriting.
“I told him to read every contract,” she whispered.
“He always said, ‘I trust you.'”
Across town…
Dominic stormed into his office.
His assistant hurried toward him.
“Sir…”
“What?”
“The bank froze the corporate operating account.”
His face turned pale.
“What do you mean froze it?”
“They said one of the major shareholders requested a financial review.”
Dominic laughed.
“I’m the only shareholder.”
His accountant slowly entered the room.
“Actually…”
“No.”
“You own sixty-two percent.”
“The remaining thirty-eight percent belongs to your wife.”
Silence.
“What?”
The accountant handed him the company records.
“You both signed these years ago.”
Dominic stared at the papers.
For the first time…
He realized Elena had quietly protected herself long before he ever laid a hand on her.
Meanwhile…
Elena’s parents sat inside the bank manager’s office.
“I’m sorry,” the manager said.
“Without your daughter’s guarantee…”
“We cannot approve the mortgage.”
Her mother slammed her purse onto the desk.
“There has to be another way.”
The manager shook his head.
“You no longer qualify.”
Her father whispered,
“We already gave notice on our apartment.”
“And we paid a non-refundable deposit.”
“I’m very sorry.”
By afternoon…
Elena’s phone rang again.
This time…
She answered.
Her mother was crying.
“You’ve ruined us.”
Elena remained silent.
“We’re your parents.”
“You owe us.”
Elena finally spoke.
“When I begged you for help yesterday…”
“I couldn’t breathe.”
“You told me to fix my marriage.”
Another silence.
“I simply followed your advice.”
“What?”
“I fixed my problems.”
“I removed myself from yours.”
Then she ended the call.
Later that evening…
A detective entered Elena’s hospital room.
“Mrs. Carter?”
“Yes.”
“We’ve obtained photographs from the paramedics.”
He opened a folder.
Bruises.
Broken furniture.
Blood on the kitchen floor.
Neighbors had also provided security camera footage.
One recording clearly captured Dominic dragging Elena back inside the house before calling 911.
“It doesn’t look like an accident,” the detective said.
“No,” Elena replied quietly.
“It never was.”
The following morning…
Dominic arrived at the hospital carrying an enormous bouquet of white roses.
His expensive suit was perfectly pressed.
His eyes filled with practiced tears.
“Baby…”
“I’m so sorry.”
“I lost control.”
“It’ll never happen again.”
Before Elena could answer…
Two police officers stepped into the room.
“Mr. Carter?”
“Yes?”
“You’ve been served with an emergency protective order.”
One officer continued,
“You’re also under arrest on suspicion of aggravated domestic assault.”
Dominic stared at Elena in disbelief.
“You called the police?”
“No,” Elena answered calmly.
“I finally told the truth.”
The officers placed him in handcuffs.
Patients and nurses watched silently as the once-respected businessman was led through the hallway.
That afternoon…
Rachel returned with another folder.
“I have more news.”
“What now?”
She smiled.
“We completed a preliminary forensic review of the company.”
“There are serious financial irregularities.”
“What kind?”
Rachel slid several tax records across the bed.
“Tax fraud.”
“Hidden offshore accounts.”
“False invoices.”
“Millions of dollars moved through shell companies.”
Elena slowly closed the folder.
“So…”
“He didn’t just destroy our marriage.”
Rachel nodded.
“He may have destroyed his entire career.”
For the first time since waking in the ICU…
Elena smiled.
The beating had almost taken her life.
But it had also awakened the woman who had spent years making everyone else’s dreams possible while abandoning her own.
Now…
She intended to reclaim every piece of it.
