PART 3: The Audit
“Christian!” Margaret gasped, her hand flying to her throat, her gold bracelets clinking together like a warning bell. “My darling boy! Why didn’t you call us? We would have had the driver collect you in the Rolls!”
“The Rolls I bought?” I asked, my voice dangerously quiet as I stepped away from the sink, keeping my arm wrapped firmly around Emma’s waist. She clung to me, her body shaking with a decade of unshed tears.
“Well, yes, of course,” Margaret stammered, casting a sharp, warning glare at Jennifer. “But what is going on out here? Why is Emma… why aren’t you inside celebrating? Michael just secured the local distribution rights for the restaurant group!”

“My father’s medical bills were paid by me, Margaret,” Emma said, her voice suddenly finding a quiet, razor-sharp strength as she stood up straight beside me. “My family never asked for a dime of Christian’s money. You intercepted my mail. You blocked my phone calls to him. You told me if I complained to him, you’d tell him I was trying to ruin his relationship with his mother.”
I looked at Margaret. The woman who had raised me, the woman I had trusted with the keys to my kingdom, had used my love for her as a weapon to torture the only person who had loved me when I was nobody.
“Michael!” Margaret screamed toward the house. “Michael, get out here!”
My younger brother Michael stumbled out of the sliding doors, a half-empty bottle of vintage champagne in his hand, completely unaware that the police cruisers were already turning down our private driveway…
