Oregano: A Powerful Mediterranean Herb and How to Prepare a Homemade Herbal Infusion

  • by

Oregano is one of the most popular aromatic herbs in Mediterranean cooking. Known for its distinctive fragrance and slightly peppery taste, it has been used for generations in traditional cooking and herbal preparations.

Beyond its culinary uses, oregano contains naturally occurring plant compounds, including carvacrol, thymol, and polyphenols.

These compounds have attracted scientific interest because of their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Laboratory studies have investigated oregano extracts and essential oils against certain bacteria and fungi.

However, laboratory findings do not mean that drinking oregano tea can cure bacterial or fungal infections.

One of the easiest ways to enjoy this aromatic herb is by preparing a simple homemade oregano infusion.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of fresh oregano leaves or 1 teaspoon of dried oregano.
  • 250 ml of drinking water.
  • 1 teaspoon of natural honey (optional).
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice (optional).
  • A small piece of fresh ginger (optional).

Step 1: Choose Fresh Oregano

Select fresh, healthy oregano leaves with a pleasant aromatic smell.

If using fresh oregano, choose leaves that are green and free from visible damage.

You can also use dried culinary oregano purchased from a reliable food supplier.

Make sure you are using culinary oregano (Origanum vulgare), rather than an unidentified wild plant.

Step 2: Wash the Leaves

Rinse fresh oregano leaves thoroughly under running water.

Remove any damaged leaves, dirt, or unwanted stems.

Pat the leaves dry using a clean kitchen towel.

If using dried oregano, no washing is necessary.

Step 3: Heat the Water

Pour approximately 250 ml of drinking water into a small saucepan.

Bring the water to a gentle boil.

Once it begins boiling, remove the saucepan from the heat.

Step 4: Prepare the Oregano Infusion
