My Five-Year-Old Son Took One Look at Our Newborn …

  • by

I was grasping at shadows.

Three days later, my mother came to visit.

She held Lily for nearly an hour.

Then she smiled.

“She’s absolutely gorgeous.”

“I think so too.”

“But…”

She stopped.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“No. Tell me.”

She laughed awkwardly.

“I was just thinking she doesn’t resemble anyone in the family.”

My pulse quickened.

“You noticed?”

“Every baby is different.”

“But you noticed.”

She nodded reluctantly.

“A little.”

That single conversation planted another seed of doubt.

That afternoon, I dug an old storage box out of the attic.

Inside were Max’s newborn photos.

Mine.

Ethan’s.

I spread them across the dining table.

Max wandered over.

He pointed at one picture.

“That’s me.”

“It is.”

Then he pointed at Lily sleeping in her bassinet.

“That’s not her.”

I closed my eyes.

“Max…”

He wasn’t looking at me.

He was looking at the photographs.

“The baby I saw had eyes like yours.”

“Lily’s eyes are still changing.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“Different eyes.”

Different baby.

The words echoed through my mind.

That evening, after everyone had gone to bed, I quietly opened the folder the hospital had given us.

Birth certificate paperwork.

Vaccination records.

Discharge instructions.

Insurance forms.

Everything looked normal.

Until one sheet slipped onto the floor.

It wasn’t ours.

The name at the top read:

Baby Girl Carter.

Different room number.

Different parents.

Different medical chart.

How had someone else’s paperwork ended up inside our discharge packet?

A simple filing mistake…

Or something much bigger?

My hands began to shake.

I slowly reached for my phone.

There was only one person who could answer my questions.

The hospital’s maternity director.

And for the first time since bringing Lily home, I realized Max’s terrifying words might not have been childish imagination after all.
