Marshmallow Snowmen for Hot Chocolate

  • by

Step 1: Prepare Your Ingredients

Arrange the marshmallows, pretzel sticks, orange candy, and chocolate icing on a clean work surface.

Prepare a plate or tray where you can assemble the snowmen.

If you are making these treats with children, have an adult handle any sharp skewers or cutting tools.

Step 2: Build the Snowman’s Body

Take three large marshmallows for each snowman.

Arrange them vertically, with one marshmallow for the head, one for the middle, and one for the bottom.

To keep them together, carefully thread the marshmallows onto a food-safe wooden skewer, leaving the top of the head free of the sharp point.

Alternatively, use melted chocolate between the marshmallows to hold them together. Allow the chocolate to set before decorating.

Step 3: Make the Pretzel Arms

Break two pretzel sticks into shorter pieces.

Gently push one piece into each side of the middle marshmallow to create the snowman’s arms.

Adjust the angle so the arms point slightly upward or outward.

Step 4: Add the Pretzel Legs

Take two short pretzel pieces and carefully insert them into the bottom marshmallow.

Position them so they resemble two little legs.

Leave enough pretzel exposed to make the legs clearly visible.

Step 5: Make the Carrot Nose

Take a small piece of orange candy corn or orange jelly candy.

Shape it into a small triangle if necessary.

Gently press it into the front of the top marshmallow to create a carrot-shaped nose.

If the candy does not stay in place, use a tiny dab of melted chocolate as edible glue.

Step 6: Draw the Eyes and Smile

Transfer the melted chocolate or chocolate icing into a small piping bag.

If you do not have a piping bag, use a toothpick or the tip of a clean skewer.

Carefully draw two small eyes on the top marshmallow.

Next, pipe a curved line underneath the nose to create a cheerful smile.

Allow the chocolate to set for a few minutes.

Step 7: Add the Snowman’s Buttons

Use the chocolate icing to place two or three small dots down the center marshmallow.

These dots represent the snowman’s coal buttons.

You can also use mini chocolate chips, pressing them gently into the marshmallow.

Step 8: Let the Decorations Set

Place the finished snowmen on a plate or tray.

Allow the chocolate decorations to firm up for approximately 5–10 minutes.

If you are not serving them immediately, keep them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

Step 9: Mix the Cocoa Ingredients

In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, cocoa powder, and pinch of salt.

Add the hot water and whisk until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.

Step 10: Heat the Cocoa Mixture

Place the saucepan over medium heat.

Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring continuously.

Let it cook for approximately 2 minutes, taking care not to let it scorch.

Step 11: Add the Milk

Gradually pour in the milk while whisking.

Heat gently until the hot chocolate is steaming and thoroughly warmed.

Do not allow it to boil vigorously, as this can affect its texture and cause it to spill over.

Step 12: Add the Vanilla

Remove the saucepan from the heat.

Stir in the vanilla extract.

Whisk until the hot chocolate is smooth and slightly frothy.

Taste and adjust the sweetness if desired.
