Step 1: Prepare the Lettuce
Carefully separate the largest outer leaves from the iceberg lettuce. Wash and dry them well. Set aside in the refrigerator until ready to use.
Step 2: Make the Sauce
Whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. Chill until serving.
Step 3: Form the Patties
Mix the beef with the salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Divide into four equal portions and shape into patties slightly larger than your lettuce leaves.
Step 4: Cook the Burgers
Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat. Cook the burgers for about 4–5 minutes per side, depending on thickness. During the last minute, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty and allow it to melt.
Step 5: Assemble
Lay two lettuce leaves slightly overlapping to create a sturdy “bun.” Add:
- Cheeseburger patty
- Tomato slices
- Red onion
- Pickles
- Burger sauce
Top with two more lettuce leaves.
Step 6: Serve
Wrap the burger halfway with parchment paper if desired for easier eating. Serve with baked fries, sweet potato fries, roasted vegetables, or a fresh salad.
Tips
- Double up the lettuce leaves to keep the burger from falling apart.
- Chill the lettuce before serving for extra crispness.
- Add crispy bacon, avocado, sautéed mushrooms, or jalapeños for even more flavor.
- These burgers are naturally lower in carbs than traditional burgers while still being hearty and satisfying.
