Jamaica (Hibiscus) Water with Bay Leaf & Cinnamon: A Refreshing Herbal Drink

Hibiscus tea—often called Jamaica water (Agua de Jamaica)—is a vibrant herbal beverage enjoyed in many parts of the world. Combined with bay leaf and cinnamon, it creates a flavorful drink that many people include as part of a healthy lifestyle.

While social media often claims this drink can “clean the kidneys,” “burn fat,” or “cure” health conditions, these claims are not supported by strong scientific evidence. Hibiscus may help support heart health and healthy blood pressure in some people, but it is not a miracle remedy.

Ingredients

  • 2 liters (8 cups) of water
  • 1 cup dried hibiscus flowers (flor de Jamaica)
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • Juice of 1 lemon (optional)
  • 2–3 tablespoons honey or your preferred sweetener (optional)
  • Ice cubes (optional)

Step 1: Boil the Water

Pour the water into a large saucepan and bring it to a boil.

Step 2: Add the Herbs

Once boiling, add:

  • Dried hibiscus flowers
  • Bay leaves
  • Cinnamon sticks

Reduce the heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes.

Step 3: Let It Steep

Turn off the heat and let the mixture steep for another 10 minutes to deepen the flavor.

Step 4: Strain

Pour the tea through a fine strainer into a large pitcher, removing the flowers, bay leaves, and cinnamon sticks.

Step 5: Add Lemon (Optional)

Stir in fresh lemon juice for a brighter, tangier flavor.

Step 6: Sweeten

If desired, add honey or another sweetener while the tea is still warm and stir until dissolved.

Step 7: Chill

Allow the tea to cool, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

Serve over ice for a refreshing drink.

Possible Benefits

When enjoyed as part of a balanced diet, hibiscus tea may:

  • Help keep you hydrated
  • Provide antioxidants
  • Support overall heart health
  • Contribute to healthy blood pressure in some people
  • Offer a naturally caffeine-free beverage

Storage

Store in a covered pitcher or sealed bottles in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Tips

  • Add fresh mint leaves for extra freshness.
  • Include orange slices for a citrus twist.
  • Adjust the amount of cinnamon or hibiscus to suit your taste.
  • Enjoy it hot during cooler months or iced in warm weather.

A Quick Health Note

Hibiscus tea is a delicious and refreshing beverage, but it does not detox the kidneys, target fat loss, or cure chronic diseases. If you have low blood pressure, take blood pressure medications, are pregnant, or have kidney or liver disease, consult your healthcare provider before consuming large amounts of hibiscus tea regularly.
