« I wasn’t planning to trap you. » He smiled sadly. « I was telling my father I thought my plan was almost complete. »
« Were you talking to your father? »
« He still asks questions about you every week. »
« I wasn’t planning to trap you. »
I sank into a chair.
All the terrible possibilities I had imagined have dissolved.
Only to reveal something more painful.
Matthew hadn’t spent his life trying to control me.
He did it because he loved me.
And somehow, that made it hurt even more.
« I need to ask you something. »
Matthew nodded.
“If I had failed… If I had embarrassed myself… If I had made terrible decisions… Would you have intervened every time?”
The answer came in his silence.
Matthew hadn’t spent his life trying to control me.
I stood up.
“That’s exactly the problem.”
Her shoulders slumped.
« I know. »
“No.” I wiped my eyes. “I don’t think you will.”
I headed towards the front door.
“You believed in me.”
« More than anyone else, » he murmured.
« THANKS. »
He looked full of hope.
“You believed in me.”
Then I continued.
« But you never believed that I deserved ownership of my own life. »
Hope has disappeared.
« I need space, » I added.
“Ashley…”
“No.” I raised my hand. “For once, I get to decide what happens next.”
He nodded once.
For the first time, Matthew let me go without trying to shape where I went.
« But you never believed that I deserved ownership of my own life. »

The following months were awkward.
Painful.
Necessary.
We started seeing a therapist.
Matthew has redeemed himself dozens of times.
He started looking for solutions before I even asked him to.
So stop.
He asked, « What do you think? »
Instead of, « I’ve already dealt with it »
At first, I didn’t know how to answer.
“I’ve already dealt with it.”
Then one afternoon, I made a business decision with which Matthew completely disagreed.
I knew it because I saw it flashing across his face.
He smiled anyway.
« What do you need from me? » he asked.
I studied it carefully.
« Nothing. »
He nodded.
« All right. »
For the first time, I discovered how satisfying it was to succeed or fail because the choice had truly been mine.
« What do you need from me? »

Almost a year later, I found myself behind the scenes at the launch of my publishing house.
Old Ashley would have to disappear.
This Ashley went on stage.
Then I spotted Matthew in the back row.
An older man standing next to him asked, « You should be proud. »
“I’ve always been proud,” Matthew replied. “I’ve finally learned that loving her doesn’t mean deciding who she should become.”
For most of our lives, one of us has always been in charge.
Now we were simply walking side by side.
