How to Clean Sticky Grease Off Kitchen Cabinets

  • by

Before tackling the grease, wipe the cabinet doors with a dry microfiber cloth.

This removes loose dust and crumbs and prevents them from turning into muddy residue when you add water.

Step 2: Make a Degreasing Solution

Fill a bowl with warm water and add a few drops of dishwashing liquid.

Dish soap is designed to break down grease, making it a practical choice for everyday kitchen cabinet buildup.

Don’t soak the cabinets. Too much water can seep into seams, unfinished edges, or joints and cause swelling or other damage.

Step 3: Wipe From Top to Bottom

Dip a microfiber cloth into the solution and wring it out well.

Start at the top of the cabinet and work downward. Pay extra attention to the areas around handles and the cabinets closest to the stove, where grease tends to accumulate.

For stubborn spots, allow the damp cloth to sit against the greasy area briefly to soften the residue before wiping again.

Step 4: Tackle Stubborn Buildup

If a sticky layer remains, apply a small amount of your dish-soap solution directly to a soft sponge and gently work on the area.

For durable, washable surfaces, a mild baking-soda-and-dish-soap paste can sometimes help loosen stubborn grease. Use gentle pressure and avoid abrasive scrubbing.

Always check the cabinet manufacturer’s care instructions first, particularly for painted, wood, laminate, veneer, or specialty finishes.

Step 5: Clean the Details

Grease often hides around cabinet handles, edges, corners, and decorative grooves.

Use an old soft toothbrush to reach these areas. Work carefully rather than aggressively, especially around painted or delicate finishes.

Step 6: Rinse and Dry

After removing the grease, wipe the cabinets again with a clean, slightly damp microfiber cloth to remove any soap residue.

Then dry the surface thoroughly with a clean towel.

This final step is important because leaving moisture on wooden or porous surfaces can cause damage over time.

How to Keep Cabinets From Getting Sticky Again

The easiest way to prevent heavy grease buildup is to clean small amounts regularly instead of waiting until the cabinets become heavily coated.

After cooking, quickly wipe the cabinet doors near the stove if you notice grease or splashes. Clean the handles regularly as well, since they collect both cooking residue and fingerprints.

Using your range hood or ventilation fan while cooking can also help reduce the amount of airborne grease that settles on nearby surfaces.

A few minutes of routine cleaning can save you from a much bigger scrubbing job later.

The secret isn’t scrubbing harder—it’s using a grease-cutting cleaner, working gently, and keeping moisture under control. With the right approach, even sticky kitchen cabinets can look clean and fresh again.
