Cut the plastic bottle around one-third of the way down from the top.
Turn the top portion upside down so it forms a funnel inside the bottom half.
Tape the two pieces together if needed.
Step 2: Make the Attractant
Mix:
- 1 cup warm water
- ¼ cup sugar
Stir until the sugar dissolves.
Allow the mixture to cool to lukewarm before adding the yeast.
Step 3: Add the Yeast
Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of active dry yeast over the sugar solution.
There’s no need to stir.
The yeast will begin producing carbon dioxide over the next several hours.
Step 4: Assemble the Trap
Place the funnel into the bottle with the narrow opening pointing downward.
Wrap the outside of the bottle with black paper or a dark cloth if desired, as darker surroundings may improve attraction for some mosquito species.
Step 5: Place the Trap
Position the trap in:
- Shady outdoor areas
- Patios
- Near shrubs
- Areas where mosquitoes are commonly seen
Avoid placing it close to where people are sitting, as it could attract mosquitoes into the area.
Step 6: Replace the Mixture
Replace the sugar-and-yeast solution every 1–2 weeks, or sooner if it stops producing bubbles or develops mold.
Tips for Better Mosquito Control
A homemade trap works best when combined with other preventive measures:
- Empty standing water from buckets, flowerpots, birdbaths, and gutters.
- Keep swimming pools properly maintained.
- Install or repair window and door screens.
- Wear long sleeves and pants when mosquitoes are active.
- Use an EPA-registered insect repellent according to the label when spending time outdoors.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using water that is too hot, which can kill the yeast.
- Placing the trap in direct sunlight, where heat can reduce yeast activity.
- Forgetting to replace the solution regularly.
- Relying on the trap alone to control mosquitoes.
