Ingredients
- 1 cup raw or pasteurized honey
- 8–10 peeled garlic cloves
- A clean glass jar with a lid
Step 1: Prepare the Garlic
Peel the garlic cloves.
Lightly crush each clove to help release its natural compounds.
Step 2: Fill the Jar
Place the garlic cloves into a clean glass jar.
Step 3: Add the Honey
Pour enough honey over the garlic to completely cover all the cloves.
Step 4: Let It Infuse
Seal the jar and leave it at room temperature for several days, or refrigerate according to your preferred recipe and food safety practices.
Over time, the honey becomes thinner as moisture from the garlic mixes with it.
Step 5: Enjoy
Some people use a small spoonful of the honey in tea or on toast, or add the garlic to salad dressings and marinades.
Remember that honey is high in natural sugars, so moderation is important.
Who Should Be Careful?
Garlic and honey are safe for most people in normal food amounts, but there are some exceptions.
Garlic
Garlic may:
- Cause heartburn or stomach upset
- Increase the risk of bleeding, especially if you take blood-thinning medications such as warfarin or certain antiplatelet drugs
- Interact with some medications
Honey
Do not give honey to babies under 1 year of age because of the risk of infant botulism.
People with diabetes should also consider the sugar content when including honey in their diet.
