Date Seed Tea: Traditional Beverage, Potential Benefits, and How to Make It

  • by

Ingredients

  • Seeds from 10–15 dates
  • 2 cups (500 ml) of water
  • Optional: 2–3 slices of fresh ginger
  • Optional: Cinnamon stick or honey for flavor

Step 1: Clean the Seeds

Wash the date seeds thoroughly to remove any remaining fruit.

Step 2: Dry the Seeds

Allow the seeds to air-dry completely or dry them in a low-temperature oven.

Step 3: Roast

Place the dried seeds on a baking tray and roast them at 180°C (350°F) for about 25–35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they become dark brown and fragrant.

Step 4: Grind

Once cooled, grind the roasted seeds into a coarse powder using a coffee grinder or blender.

Step 5: Brew

Add 1 tablespoon of the ground date seeds to 2 cups of water. If desired, add fresh ginger or a cinnamon stick.

Step 6: Simmer

Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes.

Step 7: Strain and Serve

Strain the tea into a cup. Sweeten with honey if desired and enjoy it warm.

Tips

  • Store roasted ground date seeds in an airtight container for up to one month.
  • Experiment with spices like cardamom or cinnamon for extra flavor.
  • Since it is naturally caffeine-free, it can be enjoyed any time of day.

A Balanced Perspective

Date seed tea is a flavorful traditional drink that may provide antioxidants and can be a pleasant caffeine-free beverage. However, claims that it can cure cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, or other serious illnesses are not supported by reliable scientific evidence. It is best enjoyed as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, not as a replacement for medical care.
