Dark Elbows, Dark Knees and Dark Neck: Causes, Home Remedies and Treatments That Help

  • by

Sun exposure can make pigmentation darker and can make it harder for dark spots to fade.

If your elbows, knees, or neck are exposed to sunlight, use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.

For pigmentation, the AAD recommends sunscreen as an important part of treatment and prevention.

Remember that treating pigmentation isn’t only about removing existing discoloration. You also need to prevent new pigment from developing.

What About Home Remedies?

You may have seen recipes using lemon juice, baking soda, onion, turmeric, honey, or rice water to lighten dark knees and elbows.

Some of these ingredients may make the skin feel temporarily smoother, but that doesn’t mean they are proven treatments for hyperpigmentation.

In particular, lemon juice and baking soda can irritate the skin.

Irritation can trigger more inflammation and potentially make pigmentation worse.

So instead of trying increasingly harsh DIY treatments, focus on:

  1. Gentle cleansing
  2. Moisturizing
  3. Reducing friction
  4. Appropriate exfoliation
  5. Sun protection
  6. Treating any underlying skin or medical condition

A Simple At-Home Routine

Here’s a much safer routine to try.

Morning

Step 1: Wash gently.

Step 2: Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer.

Step 3: Apply SPF 30+ to exposed areas.

Evening

Step 1: Clean the skin gently.

Step 2: Apply your moisturizer.

Step 3: If your skin tolerates it, use a product containing one gentle pigmentation-supporting ingredient such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, azelaic acid, or retinol.

Step 4: Don’t scrub afterward.

Give your skin time to respond.
