Classic Butter Cookies

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 2: Cream the Butter and Sugar

In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar with an electric mixer for 3–5 minutes, until the mixture is light, fluffy, and pale in color.

Step 3: Add the Wet Ingredients

Beat in the egg until fully incorporated. Add the vanilla extract and mix until smooth.

Step 4: Add the Dry Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing on low speed until a soft dough forms.

If the dough feels too stiff to pipe, mix in 1–2 tablespoons of milk, one tablespoon at a time, until it reaches a smooth, pipeable consistency.

Step 5: Pipe the Cookies

Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large open star tip.

Pipe swirls, rosettes, shells, or ridged cookies onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches (5 cm) between each cookie.

Decorate with sprinkles or coarse sugar if desired.

Step 6: Chill (Optional)

For cookies that hold their shape better, refrigerate the piped cookies for 20–30 minutes before baking.

Step 7: Bake

Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden while the centers remain pale.

Step 8: Cool

Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 9: Decorate

Once cooled, dip half of each cookie in melted chocolate and sprinkle with chopped nuts or festive decorations if desired.

Tips

  • Use room-temperature butter for the smoothest dough.
  • Avoid overmixing after adding the flour to keep the cookies tender.
  • If the dough becomes too soft while piping, refrigerate it for 10–15 minutes.
  • Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 3 months.

Variations

  • Chocolate Butter Cookies: Replace ¼ cup of the flour with unsweetened cocoa powder.
  • Lemon Butter Cookies: Add 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon zest.
  • Almond Butter Cookies: Replace the vanilla with 1 teaspoon almond extract.
  • Holiday Cookies: Decorate with colored sugar, festive sprinkles, or drizzle with white chocolate.

These homemade Butter Cookies are rich, buttery, and beautifully crisp, making them perfect for holidays, cookie trays, or enjoying with a cup of coffee or tea. 🍪✨
