Sometimes, the smallest question can require the greatest amount of courage.
Today, a young woman living with a disability decided to do something that many people might consider incredibly simple. She gathered her courage, put aside her fear of being ignored or judged, and asked the world a small question:
“Can I get a hi?”
It wasn’t a demand for attention. She wasn’t asking for sympathy. She simply wanted to feel seen.
For many people, saying hello is something they do without thinking. We walk past strangers, smile, wave, leave comments and continue with our busy lives. But for someone who has experienced people staring, making assumptions or looking away, reaching out can require enormous emotional strength.
Behind every photograph is a person with feelings, dreams, insecurities and hopes. A disability may change the way someone moves through the world, but it does not change their desire to be respected, included and treated with kindness.
Perhaps that’s why this simple request deserves more than a quick scroll.
Imagine having the courage to put yourself out there when you aren’t sure how people will respond. Imagine wondering whether anyone will acknowledge you. Imagine finally deciding to ask for something as simple as a greeting.
A “hi” may take only two letters and a second to type, but to the person receiving it, those two letters can mean much more.
They can say, “I see you.”
They can say, “You matter.”
They can say, “You belong here too.”
And sometimes, that is exactly what someone needs to hear.
We live in a world where people are often judged by appearances before anyone takes the time to understand their story. Disability can make those judgments even more painful. People may focus on a wheelchair, a physical difference or something else they immediately notice instead of seeing the whole person sitting in front of them.
But a wheelchair is not a person’s identity.
A disability is not the sum of someone’s dreams.
And needing assistance does not make someone less worthy of friendship, love, respect or attention.
The woman in this story chose courage over silence. She could have remained quiet. She could have worried about what strangers might think. Instead, she asked a simple question and opened the door for people to respond with kindness.
So if you came across her story today, perhaps don’t overthink it.
Say hello.
Leave a kind message.
Remind her that she is not invisible.
Because sometimes we don’t realize how powerful a small act of kindness can be. A single greeting might brighten someone’s afternoon. A supportive comment might make someone smile. And knowing that strangers are willing to acknowledge you can make the world feel a little less lonely.
We should never underestimate the impact of kindness, especially toward people who may already feel overlooked by society.
So here is the answer to her question:
Hi. ❤️
You are seen.
You are worthy of kindness.
And you deserve to be welcomed just like everyone else.
