Accidentally splashed bleach on your favorite shirt? Don’t panic. While bleach stains are permanent because the color has been removed from the fabric, there are several creative ways to restore or disguise the damage and give your clothing a second life.
Important: Bleach stains are not like ordinary stains. Since the dye has been stripped from the fabric, no cleaner or household product—including vinegar or rubbing alcohol—can reverse the bleaching. However, the methods below can help make the garment wearable again.
Method 1: Use Rubbing Alcohol (Works Best on Fresh Bleach Spots)
This method may help redistribute some of the surrounding dye into small bleach spots on dark-colored cotton fabrics.
You’ll Need
- Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol)
- Cotton balls or cotton swabs
- Clean cloth
Step 1: Test First
Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to an inconspicuous area to make sure it doesn’t damage the fabric.
Step 2: Dab Around the Bleach Spot
Moisten a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol.
Gently rub around the edges of the bleach mark, moving the surrounding dye toward the lighter area.
Step 3: Let It Dry
Allow the garment to air dry completely.
Repeat if necessary for small spots.
Note: This won’t completely remove bleach damage, but it can make small spots less noticeable.
