Baking Soda and Lemon Water: What It Can (and Can’t) Do

  • by

Baking soda and lemon water is a popular home remedy often promoted online for everything from improving digestion to “detoxifying” the body or promoting weight loss. While this simple drink has become a wellness trend, many of the health claims are exaggerated or unsupported by scientific evidence.

Lemon provides vitamin C and flavor, while baking soda can temporarily neutralize stomach acid. However, this mixture is not a cure for diseases, a detox drink, or a substitute for medical treatment.

Important: People with high blood pressure, kidney disease, heart disease, or those following a low-sodium diet should consult a healthcare professional before consuming baking soda regularly, as it contains a significant amount of sodium.

Why These Ingredients?

🍋 Lemon

Fresh lemons provide:

  • Vitamin C
  • Antioxidants
  • Natural citrus flavor
  • Small amounts of potassium

Vitamin C supports the immune system and helps maintain healthy skin and connective tissues.

🥄 Baking Soda

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate):

  • Neutralizes stomach acid
  • Is sometimes used as a short-term antacid
  • Contains a high amount of sodium

While it may provide temporary relief from occasional heartburn, it is not intended for daily, long-term use unless recommended by a healthcare provider.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (240 ml) water
  • Juice of ½ fresh lemon
  • ⅛ to ¼ teaspoon baking soda (food-grade)

Step 1: Prepare the Water
