Homemade mosquito traps made from plastic bottles are popular online because they’re inexpensive and easy to make. Most versions use a mixture of warm water, sugar, and yeast, which produces carbon dioxide (CO₂). Mosquitoes are attracted to CO₂ because it’s one of the cues they use to locate people and animals.

While these traps may catch some mosquitoes, they are not a complete solution and won’t eliminate an entire mosquito population. For the best protection, combine traps with other mosquito-control methods such as removing standing water, using window screens, and applying EPA-approved insect repellents when needed.

The trap relies on a simple principle:

  • The yeast produces carbon dioxide (CO₂).
  • Mosquitoes are attracted to the CO₂.
  • The funnel-shaped bottle makes it difficult for some mosquitoes to escape after entering.
