The Fruit Often Used in Traditional Wellness for Men Over 50

  • by

As men get older, changes in urinary habits can become increasingly common. Waking several times during the night to urinate, having a weaker stream, feeling that the bladder has not completely emptied, or needing to urinate more frequently can be frustrating and disruptive to sleep.

The fruit shown in the image is Indian gooseberry, also known as amla. Amla is traditionally used in Indian cuisine and herbal practices and provides vitamin C and other plant compounds. It can be a nutritious addition to a balanced diet, but there is no good evidence that eating amla can literally shrink an enlarged prostate or stop nighttime urination within a few days.

For men experiencing urinary symptoms, the most important step is determining the cause. An enlarged prostate, medically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, is one common cause, but urinary infections, certain medications, diabetes, bladder problems, and other conditions can produce similar symptoms.

A simple way to include amla in the diet is to wash several fresh fruits thoroughly and eat a small serving with a meal. Because fresh amla can have a very sour and astringent flavor, it can also be chopped and combined with plain yogurt, oats, or another food. Another option is to blend a small amount of fresh amla with water to make a simple unsweetened drink.

If using amla juice, avoid turning it into a heavily sweetened beverage. Large amounts of added sugar can work against overall metabolic and cardiovascular health.

Amla should be viewed as a nutritious fruit rather than a prostate medication. There is no reliable recipe that can guarantee that an enlarged prostate will shrink or that a man’s urinary stream will suddenly become strong again.

Men experiencing nighttime urination may also benefit from simple lifestyle adjustments. Limiting large amounts of fluid immediately before bedtime can reduce nighttime trips for some people. Reducing evening caffeine and alcohol may also help because both can increase urination or interfere with sleep. However, men should not drastically restrict fluids during the day simply to avoid urinating.

Maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, and managing conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure can also contribute to overall urinary and cardiovascular health.

Persistent urinary symptoms deserve attention, especially after age 50. A healthcare professional can discuss the symptoms, review medications, perform an examination when appropriate, and determine whether prostate evaluation or other testing is necessary. Treatment for an enlarged prostate can include lifestyle changes, prescription medicines, minimally invasive procedures, or surgery depending on the severity and individual circumstances.

There are also symptoms that should not be treated with a home remedy. Inability to urinate, blood in the urine, severe lower abdominal pain, fever with urinary symptoms, or sudden significant deterioration requires prompt medical attention.

Amla can certainly be enjoyed as part of a healthy diet, but the realistic goal is supporting overall nutrition rather than promising that one fruit will eliminate prostate enlargement. If nighttime bathroom trips are repeatedly disturbing sleep, identifying and treating the underlying cause is far more important than relying on a single food.
