Imagine walking into your friend’s house and finding the kitchen completely overwhelmed with dirty dishes, glasses, utensils, food containers, and clutter covering nearly every available surface.
Would you quietly pretend you didn’t notice? Walk right back out? Or roll up your sleeves and start cleaning?
A kitchen like this can look shocking at first, but there’s often more to the story than what we see in a single photo. Someone could be exhausted, overwhelmed, extremely busy, dealing with a difficult period in life, or simply have fallen behind on household chores.
Instead of judging, the most helpful thing a friend can do is ask, “Are you okay?”
If she wants help, start with the basics. Clear away food and trash first, gather all the dishes, and soak anything with dried-on food. Then wash or load the dishes, wipe down the counters, clean the sink, and finally sweep or mop the floor.
The key is not trying to do everything at once. Breaking a messy kitchen into small tasks can make the entire job feel much more manageable.
And sometimes, the best thing you can give a friend isn’t criticism—it’s a helping hand.
So, be honest: If you walked into your friend’s kitchen and saw this, what would YOU do?
