My husband dragged me into the backyard, tied my hands to a porch pillar, and struck my pregnant belly while screaming:

Part 2:

The officer opened the door.

My husband stepped forward immediately.

“She fell in the backyard,” he said. “She’s confused because of the medication.”

His mother nodded beside him.

For months, that would have been enough to make me question my own voice.

This time, I reached beneath the blanket and held up the cracked phone.

“I recorded them.”

The second officer entered and closed the door behind him.

My husband’s face changed.

Not panic.

Calculation.

He looked at the phone, then at me.

“That thing barely works,” he said. “She records nonsense when she gets emotional.”

I unlocked the screen.

My fingers were shaking so badly that the officer had to steady the phone while I found the most recent file.

The recording began with the back door opening.

Then came my husband’s footsteps.

His voice followed.

“All you give me are worthless daughters.”

My mother-in-law’s voice came next, calm and unmistakable.

“Make sure she understands what happens if she embarrasses this family again.”

Nobody in the room spoke.

The recording continued long enough for the officer to hear me begging them to stop.

Then came the sound of my body hitting the porch boards.

My husband moved toward the phone.

The officer stepped between us.

“Sir, stay where you are.”

That was the first time I had ever seen Nathan—or anyone in that family—forced to stop simply because I said what happened.

My mother-in-law started talking fast.

“She edited it.”

I looked at the officer.

“There are months more.”

He asked whether the phone contained recordings from previous incidents.

I nodded.

Then the doctor appeared in the doorway holding my chart.

He looked at the officers, then at my husband.

And he said there was something in my examination they needed to know immediately.
