Why Some Drivers Keep a Glass of Salt in Their Car — And What It Can Actually Do

A small glass of salt sitting inside a car may look unusual, but there is a simple reason this household trick has become popular among drivers. Salt can interact with moisture, which is why some people use it as a low-cost way to help reduce excess humidity inside a vehicle.

However, it is important to understand what this trick can and cannot do. A glass of ordinary table salt is not a replacement for a proper car dehumidifier, climate-control system, or professional automotive service, but it may provide a small amount of help in certain conditions.

During cold or rainy weather, moisture can accumulate inside a vehicle. Wet shoes, umbrellas, clothing, snow, rainwater, and even normal breathing can introduce moisture into the cabin. When temperatures drop, that moisture can condense on the windows and contribute to foggy glass.

This is where the salt trick comes in.

Place a small amount of dry salt inside a stable, open container and position it somewhere secure where it cannot tip over while driving. The salt can attract some moisture from the surrounding air.

Do not place the container on the dashboard, near electrical equipment, or anywhere it could spill while the vehicle is moving. A sealed moisture-absorbing product specifically designed for cars is generally a better choice if condensation is a persistent problem.

If you want to try the salt method, use a sturdy container with a wide base. Fill it with dry coarse salt and place it somewhere stable, such as a secure area of the cabin where passengers and vehicle controls will not be affected.

Check it regularly. If the salt becomes damp or begins clumping, replace it with fresh dry salt.

But there is a much more important step if your car frequently develops condensation: find the source of the moisture.

Check the floor mats and carpeting for dampness. Inspect the trunk, door seals, window seals, and areas around the windshield for signs of water intrusion.

A clogged air-conditioning drain can also contribute to moisture problems. If water is accumulating inside the vehicle despite your efforts to keep it dry, professional auto repair or automotive maintenance may be necessary.

Your vehicle’s air-conditioning system can actually be very useful for controlling humidity. Even when you’re using warm air during winter, the air-conditioning system can help remove moisture from the cabin in many vehicles.

When your windows begin fogging, use the windshield defogging or defrost setting according to your vehicle’s instructions. Directing airflow toward the windshield and using the appropriate climate-control settings can clear condensation much more effectively than relying on a small container of salt.

Avoid driving with severely fogged windows. Poor visibility can become a serious driving safety problem, particularly at night, during rain, or on busy roads.

There is another reason to be cautious with the salt trick: salt is corrosive to metal when moisture is present. A small spill inside a vehicle can potentially damage metal components or contribute to corrosion over time. Never deliberately spread salt around the interior of your car.

If your vehicle is exposed to road salt during winter, regular washing of the exterior and undercarriage can be particularly important. Road salt can accelerate corrosion of metal components, which is why car maintenance becomes especially important in areas where salted roads are common.

If you’re trying to reduce humidity, commercially available moisture absorbers can be more convenient than ordinary kitchen salt. Many products use highly absorbent materials designed specifically to collect water from enclosed spaces.

These products are available as hanging bags, tubs, or reusable containers and are generally easier to monitor than an open glass of salt.

Keeping the interior clean and dry also makes a difference. Remove wet clothing, umbrellas, towels, and muddy floor mats rather than leaving them inside the vehicle overnight.

If your carpets remain wet after rain, don’t simply mask the problem with an air freshener. Persistent moisture can eventually contribute to unpleasant odors and, in severe cases, mold growth.

A musty smell inside the vehicle can be a sign that moisture is trapped somewhere beneath the carpet or inside the ventilation system.

Regularly cleaning the car interior and checking the condition of floor mats and seals can help prevent these problems from becoming expensive repairs.

So, should you keep a glass of salt in your car?

You can try it as a simple household experiment, but don’t expect dramatic results. A small amount of salt has limited moisture-absorbing capacity compared with products specifically designed for humidity control.

The most effective strategy is to keep the vehicle dry, use the climate-control and defrost systems correctly, inspect for water leaks, and address persistent condensation at its source.

If you regularly wake up to heavily fogged windows, wet carpets, a damp trunk, or a persistent musty odor, the problem may require professional car inspection and repair rather than another household trick.

The salt-in-a-car idea is inexpensive and may offer a little help with minor humidity, but proper ventilation, air conditioning, moisture control, and regular vehicle maintenance are far more reliable ways to keep your car comfortable, dry, and safe.
