Part 2: The Call From Overseas
Three days later, Mara was halfway around the world.
The desert air shimmered under a relentless sun as helicopters lifted off from the forward operating base.
She had just finished treating a young corporal who had suffered heat exhaustion when her phone vibrated inside her cargo pocket.
The caller ID read:
Captain Eleanor Brooks – Army Legal Assistance Office
Mara answered immediately.
“Captain?”
“Mara… are you somewhere private?”
A chill ran through her.
“Yes.”
“I’m calling because someone contacted the Defense Finance and Accounting Service yesterday claiming to be your authorized financial representative.”
Mara frowned.
“What?”
“They requested information about your military savings account, your Thrift Savings Plan, your life insurance beneficiary, and your deployment bonuses.”
Her heart skipped.
“Who?”
Captain Brooks paused.
“The caller identified herself as Celeste Carter.”
Silence.
Mara stared across the desert.
“That’s impossible.”
“We know,” the captain replied.
“They failed every security verification.”
“But they knew your Social Security number.”
“They knew your deployment location.”
“They knew your date of enlistment.”
Mara slowly closed her eyes.
Only three people knew all of that.
Her.
Her father.
And Celeste.
That evening, Mara sat alone inside her barracks room.
She unlocked her secure banking app.
Nothing had been stolen.
Yet.
Then she opened another application.
Her credit report.
Three recent inquiries appeared.
One from a private lender.
Another from an investment company.
A third from a luxury vehicle dealership.
She had authorized none of them.
Someone was trying to use her identity.
She immediately called her bank.
“I want every account frozen.”
“Ma’am, are you sure?”
“Every account.”
“New passwords.”
“Two-factor authentication.”
“And place a fraud alert with every credit bureau.”
Within thirty minutes everything was secured.
Then she called Captain Brooks again.
“I want military investigators involved.”
“They already are,” the captain replied.
Two days later…
Special Agent David Collins from the Army Criminal Investigation Division appeared at her office.
He placed a thin folder on the desk.
“We’ve traced the phone records.”
Mara looked up.
“It came from your father’s home.”
Her stomach tightened.
“My father?”
“The call originated from the landline registered to his address.”
Mara whispered,
“Was he the one who called?”
David hesitated.
“We don’t know.”
“But someone inside that house did.”
Meanwhile…
Back home…
Celeste paced across the living room.
“It shouldn’t have failed!”
She slammed a folder onto the coffee table.
Her father looked exhausted.
“Celeste…”
“You promised she trusted us.”
Graham rubbed his temples.
“I never promised anything.”
“You gave me all her information.”
“You said she wouldn’t notice.”
He looked horrified.
“I never said to use it.”
“You volunteered it!” Celeste shouted.
“You handed me every document after Mara left for basic training.”
“You even showed me copies of her enlistment papers.”
Graham suddenly realized what he had done years earlier.
He hadn’t meant to help steal from his daughter.
But he had handed over everything needed to try.
Three weeks later…
Mara’s commanding officer called her into headquarters.
Waiting inside were Captain Brooks…
Special Agent Collins…
And a civilian attorney.
The attorney introduced herself.
“I’m Rebecca Sloan.”
“I specialize in financial fraud.”
She opened a thick binder.
“We subpoenaed Celeste’s financial records.”
“What did you find?” Mara asked.
Rebecca slid several photographs across the table.
Luxury handbags.
Designer jewelry.
A sports car.
Private vacations.
All purchased within five years.
“But your father’s salary couldn’t possibly support this lifestyle.”
“So where did the money come from?” Mara asked.
Rebecca turned another page.
“There were five previous victims.”
“They were all elderly widowers.”
“They all added Celeste to bank accounts or property deeds.”
“Within months…”
“They lost nearly everything.”
Mara stared in disbelief.
“My father…”
Rebecca nodded sadly.
“He wasn’t the first.”
“He was simply the latest.”
That evening…
Mara called her father.
He answered on the first ring.
“Mara…”
His voice sounded broken.
“Did she try to steal my military savings?”
A long silence followed.
Finally…
“Yes.”
“Did you know?”
“I knew she wanted to borrow money.”
“I didn’t know she’d go this far.”
“You gave her my documents.”
“I know.”
“You gave her everything she needed.”
His breathing became shaky.
“I’m sorry.”
Mara’s voice remained calm.
“I’m not asking for an apology.”
“I’m asking whether you’re finally ready to tell the truth.”
Another long silence.
Then…
“Yes.”
“For the first time…”
“I’m ready.”
As Mara ended the call, she looked toward the sunrise breaking over the base.
Her first warning at the dinner table had been ignored.
Now the investigation had begun.
And her father’s testimony would expose far more than a failed attempt to access her military savings.
It would reveal a pattern of deception that had been hidden inside their family for over a decade.
End of Part 2.
