Lemon and Salt Room Trick: Does It Really Work?

You’ve probably seen posts claiming that cutting a lemon into four pieces, sprinkling it with salt, and leaving it in a room can “change your life.” While this simple trick won’t purify the air, remove bacteria, or cure illnesses, it can leave your room smelling fresh with a pleasant citrus aroma.

Here’s how to try it yourself.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 fresh lemon
  • 1–2 teaspoons coarse sea salt or rock salt
  • A small plate or bowl

Step 1 – Wash the Lemon

Rinse the lemon thoroughly under cool running water.

Pat it dry with a clean towel.

Step 2 – Cut the Lemon

Cut the lemon into four wedges.

Leave the wedges attached at the base so the lemon opens like a flower.

Step 3 – Add the Salt

Sprinkle the salt generously into the centre and over the exposed flesh of the lemon.

The salt helps draw out some of the juice and intensifies the citrus scent.

Step 4 – Place It in the Room

Set the lemon on a small plate.

Place it on a bedside table, kitchen counter, bathroom shelf, or another well-ventilated area.

Step 5 – Leave Overnight

Allow the lemon to sit for several hours or overnight.

You’ll notice a fresh citrus fragrance, especially in smaller rooms.

Step 6 – Replace When Needed

Replace the lemon after 2–3 days or sooner if it begins to dry out or develop mould.

Dispose of it and prepare a fresh one if desired.

Other Natural Ways to Freshen a Room

  • Open windows for fresh air whenever possible.
  • Keep surfaces clean and dry.
  • Empty rubbish bins regularly.
  • Simmer lemon slices with cinnamon sticks on the stove for a natural fragrance.
  • Use fresh flowers or herbs like rosemary or mint.

Helpful Tips

  • Add a few sprigs of rosemary or mint for an herbal scent.
  • A few drops of lemon essential oil can make the fragrance last longer.
  • Keep the lemon away from pets that may be sensitive to citrus.

Important Note

A lemon with salt does not purify the air, remove toxins, kill germs throughout a room, repel all insects, or provide health benefits simply by sitting indoors. Its main benefit is that it can add a pleasant natural fragrance for a short time. For improving indoor air quality, regular ventilation, cleaning, and addressing the source of odours are much more effective.
