Hibiscus Tea and Blood Pressure: What You Should Know

  • by

You may have seen headlines claiming that a simple leafy drink can dramatically lower blood pressure without medication. While hibiscus tea is a nutritious herbal beverage and some research suggests it may help support healthy blood pressure, it is not a substitute for prescribed medication. If you have high blood pressure, always follow your healthcare provider’s advice before making changes to your treatment.

Here’s how to prepare hibiscus tea and incorporate it into a heart-healthy lifestyle.

What Is Hibiscus?

Hibiscus tea is made from the dried calyces of the Hibiscus sabdariffa plant. It has a deep ruby-red color, a tart cranberry-like flavor, and is naturally rich in antioxidants called anthocyanins.

Some studies suggest that regularly drinking hibiscus tea may help produce a small reduction in blood pressure for some adults, especially when combined with a healthy lifestyle.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons dried hibiscus flowers
  • 2 cups (500 ml) water
  • 1 teaspoon honey (optional)
  • Juice of ½ lemon (optional)
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish (optional)

Step 1: Boil the Water

Bring the water to a gentle boil.

Step 2: Add the Hibiscus

Remove the pot from the heat and add the dried hibiscus flowers.

Step 3: Steep

Cover and let steep for 10–15 minutes.

The longer it steeps, the stronger the flavor and color.

Step 4: Strain

Strain the tea into a mug or pitcher, removing the flowers.

Step 5: Add Flavor

If desired, stir in a little honey and fresh lemon juice.

Serve warm or chill in the refrigerator and enjoy over ice.
