Baby Oil and Cloves: What This Popular DIY Mix Can (and Can’t) Do

Social media is full of videos claiming that mixing baby oil with whole cloves creates a miracle solution that works in “10 seconds” for everything from pain relief and insect repellent to wrinkle removal and hair growth. While cloves do contain beneficial natural compounds, there is no scientific evidence that this mixture provides instant or miraculous results.

Here’s what we actually know about baby oil, cloves, and how to use them safely.

Why Are Cloves So Popular?

Cloves are the dried flower buds of the clove tree (Syzygium aromaticum). They contain several natural compounds, the most well-known being eugenol, which has been studied for its:

  • Antioxidant properties
  • Mild anti-inflammatory effects
  • Natural fragrance
  • Mild numbing effect (used in some dental products)

However, these properties do not mean cloves can treat or cure medical conditions on their own.

What Is Baby Oil?

Baby oil is typically made from mineral oil with added fragrance.

Its main purpose is to:

  • Lock moisture into the skin
  • Reduce dryness
  • Soften rough areas
  • Help massage the skin

Baby oil is an effective moisturizer, but it does not contain ingredients that treat infections, wrinkles, or chronic pain.
