Ingredients
For the Cake:
2½ cups all-purpose flour
1½ cups granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1½ cups buttermilk (or milk + 1 tbsp vinegar)
½ cup vegetable oil
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 tablespoon red food coloring
1 teaspoon white vinegar
For Cream Cheese Frosting:
225g cream cheese (softened)
½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
3 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
1. Prepare the Batter
Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F).
Grease and line a baking pan.
Mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
In another bowl, whisk buttermilk, oil, eggs, vanilla, vinegar, and red coloring.
Combine wet and dry ingredients. Mix until smooth.
2. Bake
Pour batter into the prepared pan.
Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Allow cake to cool completely.
3. Make the Frosting
Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth.
Add powdered sugar gradually.
Mix in vanilla until creamy.
4. Decorate
Spread cream cheese frosting over the cooled cake.
Sprinkle with red velvet cake crumbs or decorate with piping.
Slice and serve.
Baking Tip:
For a rich, moist red velvet cake, do not overmix the batter after adding the flour. The buttermilk and vinegar help create the soft, velvety texture.
