Social media often claims that eating one food—such as prunes (dried plums), shown in the image—can restore muscle strength or cure sarcopenia (the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength). While prunes are a highly nutritious food, no single food can reverse sarcopenia on its own.
However, prunes can be a healthy addition to a balanced diet that supports healthy aging.
Why Prunes Are Good for Older Adults
Prunes are rich in:
- Fiber, which supports digestive health.
- Potassium, important for normal muscle and nerve function.
- Vitamin K, which supports bone health.
- Antioxidants, which help protect cells from oxidative stress.
- Natural carbohydrates, providing energy.
Some research suggests prunes may help support bone health, but they have not been proven to rebuild muscle or reverse sarcopenia by themselves.
