Purslane: The Common “Weed” That Packs a Nutritional Punch

Social media often calls purslane “the most powerful plant in the world.” While that’s an exaggeration, purslane is an exceptionally nutritious edible plant that has been enjoyed in many cultures for centuries. If correctly identified and harvested from a safe, pesticide-free area, it can be a healthy addition to your diet.

Important: Never eat a wild plant unless you are certain of its identification. Some plants that resemble purslane are toxic.

What Is Purslane?

The plant shown in the image appears to be common purslane (Portulaca oleracea), a low-growing succulent with smooth reddish stems, thick spoon-shaped leaves, and small yellow flowers.

It often grows in:

  • Gardens
  • Sidewalk cracks
  • Fields
  • Vegetable patches
  • Lawns

Many people pull it out as a weed without realizing it’s edible.

Why Is Purslane Considered Healthy?

Purslane contains a variety of nutrients, including:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids (especially alpha-linolenic acid)
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Magnesium
  • Potassium
  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Antioxidants

These nutrients support overall health, but no single plant can prevent or cure disease on its own.
