These soft, fluffy, golden biscuits are perfect for breakfast, tea time, or as a side for soups and stews.

Ingredients

  • 2½ cups (315g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ½ cup (115g) cold butter, cubed
  • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk
  • 1 egg yolk (for brushing)

Step 1: Prepare the Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine:

  • Flour
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Sugar

Mix well.

Step 2: Add the Butter

Add the cold butter cubes.

Rub the butter into the flour using your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 3: Add the Buttermilk

Pour in the buttermilk.

Mix gently until a soft dough forms.

Do not overwork the dough.

Step 4: Shape the Dough

Lightly flour your work surface.

Pat the dough into a rectangle about 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick.

Fold it in half and gently pat it out again.

Repeat this process 2–3 times to create flaky layers.

Step 5: Cut the Biscuits

Using a round biscuit cutter, cut out biscuits.

Place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

Gather scraps and repeat.

Step 6: Brush and Bake

Brush the tops with egg yolk.

Bake in a preheated oven at 220°C (425°F) for 12–15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 7: Serve

Allow to cool slightly.

Serve warm with:

  • Butter
  • Honey
  • Jam
  • Gravy
