“Mr. Henderson,” Dr. Vance said carefully, “there are no signs of a baby boy.”
Marcus blinked.
“What?”
Penelope laughed nervously.
“Maybe she’s just hiding.”
But the doctor didn’t smile.
“There is no baby.”
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Roxanne frowned.
“What do you mean, no baby?”
Dr. Vance sighed.
“Mrs. Penelope Henderson is not pregnant.”
The room exploded.
Penelope turned pale.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“No.”
His mother grabbed the doctor.
“You made a mistake!”
But Dr. Vance calmly pointed to the monitor.
“No fetus. No heartbeat. No pregnancy.”
Marcus looked at Penelope.
“You lied?”
Tears instantly filled her eyes.
“I can explain.”
Roxanne stepped back in horror.
“You said he was having a son!”
Penelope burst into tears.
“I thought I was!”
But nobody believed her.
Because six months earlier, she had proudly shown everyone an ultrasound photo.
An ultrasound Dr. Vance had never seen.
Marcus suddenly remembered something.
The envelope.
The clinic records.
The strange excuses whenever he offered to attend appointments.
And for the first time, fear replaced anger.
“Whose ultrasound was that?”
Penelope said nothing.
His mother slapped the armrest.
“Answer him!”
But before Penelope could speak, Marcus’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered absentmindedly.
“Mr. Henderson?”
“Yes?”
“This is Anderson Financial Group. We’re calling regarding the Henderson Holdings accounts.”
His face tightened.
“What about them?”
“Sir… ownership transferred this morning.”
Marcus laughed.
“Transferred where?”
“To Miss Julianne Sterling.”
His smile vanished.
“What?”
“The documents were signed five years ago.”
Cold spread through his body.
Because Julianne had never depended on him.
He had depended on her.
The condo.
The company.
Even the private clinic.
Everything belonged to her family trust.
Then another call came.
His attorney.
“Marcus.”
“What?”
“Please tell me you haven’t spent any money today.”
His heart stopped.
“Why?”
“Because none of it is yours anymore.”
Across the room, Penelope suddenly screamed.
Everyone turned.
A little girl, about four years old, had run into the ultrasound room.
“Mama!”
Penelope’s face went white.
The child wrapped her arms around Penelope’s legs.
And behind her stood a man Marcus recognized instantly.
His former best friend.
Andrew Collins.
Who quietly said six words that shattered what remained of Marcus’s world.
“I think she forgot to tell you.”
