Ryan stared at the three children as if the past had risen from the marble floor and wrapped its hands around his throat. Beside him, Vanessa’s perfect smile cracked.
“Madison,” he whispered. “What is this?”
I felt Lily’s small fingers tighten around mine. Ethan and Noah stood on either side of me in matching navy suits, their faces innocent, their eyes unmistakably Montgomery.
Rebecca stepped forward first, her pearls trembling against her throat. “This is some kind of performance,” she snapped. “You always were dramatic.”
A murmur rippled through the guests.
I lifted my chin. “Three years ago, Ryan threw me out because he believed I couldn’t have children. That same morning, I came home to tell him I was pregnant.”
Vanessa turned slowly toward Ryan. “Pregnant?”
Ryan’s lips parted, but nothing came.
“They’re mine?” he asked at last, his voice thin and broken.
I looked at the man I had once loved more than myself. The man who had let his mother humiliate me for eleven years. The man who replaced me before the ink was dry.
“They are my children,” I said. “Their blood is yours. But you were not their father.”
A collective gasp swept through the room.
Ryan stumbled down from the altar. “Madison, I didn’t know.”
“No,” I said quietly. “You didn’t ask.”
Alexander Whitmore stepped in behind us then, silver-haired, composed, terrifying in his calm. The room recognized him immediately. Billionaire. Philanthropist. A man whose name opened doors Ryan had spent his life trying to enter.
He placed one protective hand on Ethan’s shoulder.
“These children are heirs to the Whitmore estate,” Alexander announced. “As is Madison, the daughter of the woman your family helped ruin years ago.”
Rebecca went white.
For the first time, fear replaced arrogance in her eyes.
“What does he mean?” Ryan demanded.
Alexander smiled without warmth. “It means this wedding is not the scandal of the evening.”
Vanessa backed away from Ryan as if he had become contagious. Guests lifted phones. Whispers sharpened into accusations.
Then Alexander leaned close to me and said something only I could hear.
“The documents are ready. But Madison… there’s one more name on them.”
My blood turned cold.
Ryan was not the only Montgomery with secrets.
