PARRT 2 : THE PRICE OF ARROGANCE

The Storm Unleashed

The quiet in the back of the SUV was a stark contrast to the chaos I had left behind. For four years, I had hidden behind the ordinary surname of my mother’s side—Sterling—letting Andrew believe he had rescued a penniless girl from the wrong side of the tracks. He never questioned why the Escalante Conglomerate, the country’s largest financial empire, suddenly chose his failing startup for a multi-billion dollar partnership. He thought it was his own genius.

“They just served the first notice, Miss Escalante,” the lawyer, David, said from the front seat, handing me a tablet.

On the screen, live feeds of the Sterling Group’s financial metrics were already plunging into a steep, red decline.

“The mansion’s deed is held by an Escalante shell corporation,” David continued. “The corporate accounts are tied to your personal line of credit. And the family name? Your father bought out their ancestral debts ten years ago. Legally, they own nothing.”

“Good,” I said, dabbing the blood from my hand with a silk handkerchief. “Let them enjoy the next twelve hours. It will be their last.”

The Next Morning: The House of Cards Falls

At 8:00 AM, the illusion shattered for Andrew.

He was at the head of the boardroom table at Sterling Group, trying to impress a new group of investors, with Brenda sitting proudly at his side as his new ‘consultant.’ The doors didn’t just open; they were thrown back.

I walked in, wearing a tailored charcoal Escalante suit, flanked by six armed security guards and a team of forensic auditors.

Andrew stood up, his face flushing with rage. “Marianne? What the hell is this? I told you to get on your knees and stay out of my sight! Security, throw this—”

“The security guards answer to me, Andrew,” I interrupted, my voice calm, cutting through the room like ice. “Actually, everything in this room answers to me.”

David stepped forward, throwing a thick stack of legal documents onto the table. “Mr. Sterling, as of 6:00 AM today, the Escalante Conglomerate has enacted the breach-of-contract clauses. Due to personal misconduct and embezzlement of funds—specifically, the purchase of a red dress and a penthouse for a mistress using corporate lines—all funding is withdrawn. The Sterling Group is officially bankrupt.”

Andrew gasped, looking at the investors, who were already rushing out of the room. “This is absurd! My mother is a Sterling! We have legacy!”

“Your mother is currently being evicted,” I replied smoothly.

Reckoning on the Persian Rug

By noon, I returned to the Beverly Hills mansion.

The scene outside was a spectacle. Moving trucks were lined up, and movers were carrying out the expensive furniture. On the driveway, Mrs. Sterling was screaming at a mover who was holding her precious Persian rug. Andrew and Brenda arrived in a panic, only to find the electronic gates locked against them.

“You can’t do this!” Mrs. Sterling shrieked when she saw me step out of the house. “This is my home! Where is my emerald necklace? You stole it, you gutter rat!”

“Looking for this, mother?..
