Don’t Throw Away Avocado Pits! Turn Them Into a Useful Homemade Powder

Most people enjoy the creamy flesh of an avocado and toss the pit straight into the trash. However, avocado pits can be repurposed in several interesting ways. One popular method is drying and grinding the pit into a fine powder that can be used in DIY projects and natural household applications.

Step 1: Remove the Avocado Pit

After cutting open a ripe avocado, carefully remove the pit using a spoon or by gently twisting it out.

What You’ll Need:

  • 2–3 avocado pits
  • A knife
  • A grater or food processor
  • Baking tray
  • Airtight container

Step 2: Wash the Pit Thoroughly

Rinse the pit under warm water to remove any remaining avocado flesh. Pat it dry with a clean towel.

Step 3: Dry the Pit

Allow the pit to air-dry for 24–48 hours, or bake it at a low temperature (around 200°F / 95°C) for 1–2 hours until completely dry.

Tip: A dry pit is much easier to grate and grind.

Step 4: Grate the Pit

Using a box grater, carefully grate the dried avocado pit into small pieces. The pit may turn orange or reddish-brown as it oxidizes—this is normal.

Step 5: Grind Into Powder

Place the grated pieces into a blender, spice grinder, or food processor. Blend until you achieve a fine powder consistency.

Step 6: Store Properly

Transfer the powder to an airtight glass jar and keep it in a cool, dry place. Properly stored powder can last for several months.
